Shared Sunsets
By the time I arrived in Koh Samui, I had already spent several months traveling mostly on my own.
And while I genuinely love solo travel, there is something special about sharing everyday moments with someone else from time to time.
Before coming to Thailand, I had arranged to meet up with Selma, an ex-colleague from back home who happened to be in Koh Samui at the same time.
After so much solitude, it felt surprisingly nice to suddenly have company again.
There was nothing particularly extraordinary about what we did. We had dinners together, went for walks along the beach, watched the sunset, and simply talked.
But maybe that was exactly what made it so special.
Solo travel gives you a lot: freedom, independence, confidence, and endless time with your own thoughts. But after a while, it can also become very inward. You experience incredible places, yet sometimes there is no one there to immediately turn to and say, “Did you just see that?”
Meeting Selma reminded me how enjoyable it can be to share those small moments.
To laugh about things together, to exchange stories from home, to talk about life while walking along the beach or sharing a meal.
It felt familiar and comforting in a way that I hadn’t realized I missed.
And then, after a few days, we both continued on our own journeys again.
I think that’s one of the beautiful things about long-term travel. People enter your story for a while, sometimes unexpectedly, and even short periods of shared experiences can leave a lasting impression.
Those evenings in Koh Samui didn’t change my trip in a dramatic way.
But they did remind me that while I love traveling alone, I don’t necessarily want to experience everything alone.
Sometimes, sharing moments makes it even better.
