Vegan Food in Kuala Lumpur
If you’re vegan and planning for a trip to KL, you’re in for a treat.
Malaysia’s capital had an incredibly diverse food scene, and finding plant-based meals was never difficult. Whether I was looking for local dishes, healthy brunch, specialty coffee, or the occasional burger and fries, there was always something nearby.
Here are the places I’d happily return to.
After One KL
This became my go-to café during my stay. It’s not fully vegan, but it offers plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options, and since it was only a short walk from my hotel, I found myself coming back several times.
My favorite dishes were the pesto sweet potato gnocchi, the summer elote bowl and the sleepy fries (sweet potato). Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and consistently delicious.
The coffee was excellent, too, making it just as good for breakfast as it was for lunch or early dinner.
Banyan Cafê & Bistro
Another lovely and stylish café with several vegan options. I stopped by for breakfast and had the tropical oatmeal bowl and avocado toast, both of which very simple, fresh, and exactly what I was in the mood for. A great place to start the day with good coffee.
Rightside Fast Food (Pavilion KL)
This fully vegan spot is located inside Pavilion KL, making it a perfect lunch stop after a bit of (window) shopping. I ordered the Chico sandwhich with fries, and it was everything you want from comfort food.
Wholey Wonder Damai
A fully vegan café with a creative menu and a relaxed atmosphere. I had a smoothie and the sweet mala cauliflower, which was packed with flavor and something a little different from the usual café offering. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for healthy, asian-inspired food. I wish I could have gone back more often, but it was a little out of the way for me.
Minf House Vegan
One of my favorite meals in KL. This cosy fully vegan restaurant served some fantastic Asian comfort food. I ordered the ramen along with vegetable tempura, and both were excellent. Exactly the kind of meal that leaves you full and happy, portions were huge. Tucked inside an older building/mall, kind of creepy, but so worth it.
The Hungry Tapir
My favorite vegan restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. Everything about this place just worked. I tried the pink bombshell burger, the iconic nasi lemak and banoffee pie. Every dish was beautifully presented, incredibly flavorful and made me wish I had discovered the place earlier in my stay. If you only have time to visit one vegan restaurant in KL, make it this one. Reservations recommended, unless you’re an early bird dinner-goer like me :D
Kuala Lumpur turned out to be one of the easiest cities in SEA to eat vegan. From modern brunch cafés and specialty coffee to local Malaysian classics and indulgent comfort food, there was never a shortage of fantastic options.
