Vegan Food in Bali & Gili Air
Traveling as a vegan in Indonesia, especially in Bali and Gili Air was easy. Bali in particular has a huge plant-based scene. Fully vegan cafés, clearly labeled menus, and plenty of options even in non-vegan restaurants.
🌱 What to Expect
Fully plant-based cafés and restaurants
Menus with clearly marked vegan options
Staff who understand what “vegan” means (most of the time)
A mix of healthy food and comfort food
Gili Air was smaller, but still surprisingly easy to navigate as a vegan. Fewer options, but enough variety to not get bored.
Cafés & Restaurants I Loved
📍 Seminyak
Local Coffee
A cozy coffee spot that quickly became a go-to place. Great coffee, healthy bowls, and a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a slower morning.
Tasty Vegan
A fully vegan restaurant offering both local and international dishes. A good place if you want to try Indonesian classics in a vegan version or just stick to something familiar
📍 Ubud
Warung Compound
A great spot to try vegan versions of Balinese dishes. Think nasi goreng, dadar gulung, and other local favorites. A nice balance between traditional food and dietary preference.
Ra Family
I loved this place for breakfast or just a coffee break. Relaxed atmosphere overlooking rice terraces, good food, and one of those cafés you end up staying a bit longer than intended.
Plant Bistro (my favorite)
This was easily my favorite spot in Ubud, and probably one of my favorite restaurants of the whole trip.
Run by an Italian chef and completely plant-based, it felt like a mix of comfort food and something more elevated. One evening I had the basil lasagna and it was, without exaggeration, the best lasagna I’ve ever had (sorry Italy).
The desserts were heaven to (Tiramisu etc.)
I came back more than once. Zero regrets.
📍 Gili Air
Pachamama
One of my go-to-places on the island. I went there multiple times, both for breakfast and dinner.
The breakfast burrito was one of those meals you think about afterwards. Big, flavorful, and exactly what you want after a morning beach walk.
JuJu
A fully vegan café with a very cozy, relaxed atmosphere.
Good for any time of day - breakfast, lunch or dinner. They also have a small shop with eco-conscious products, which added to the overall vibe of the place.
📍 Canggu
KYND Community
Probably one of the most well-known plant-based spots in Bali. They have multiple locations.
It’s more on the aesthetic side, but still worth visiting. A mix of healthy dishes and comfort food like pasta and burgers. Good if you want variety and something a bit more fun.
My Go-To Strategy
When menus felt overwhelming or unfamiliar, I usually stuck to a few safe options:
Nasi or Mie Goreng (ask for vegan option)
Vegetable Curries
Smoothie bowls (beware of honey/dairy products)
My takeaway
Bali and Gili Air made vegan travel feel effortless.
Food wasn’t something I had to think about or plan around. It became part of the experience in a way that felt natural, not limiting.
And if anything, I probably ate better here that I do at home (way more fruit!)
